Chapter 2: The Envelope She Never Stopped Carrying

Part 2 ⬇️
For a long moment, no one moved.
Then Eli walked to the fence.
Walter stepped forward.
"Eli.
Don't."
Eli didn't stop.
He reached the iron bars and stood in front of the woman.
Up close, he could see the lines on her face, the grey at her temples, the way her hands shook around the photograph.
She looked at his forehead.
He looked at hers.
The same mark.
Small and faded, but there.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Rose," she whispered.
"My name is Rose."
Behind him, Walter's voice came sharp and low.
"She walked away.
She chose to leave.
That's the part she won't tell you."
Rose looked past Eli's shoulder.
Her voice didn't rise, but something in it hardened.
"You told me he didn't survive the birth.
You showed me a certificate.
I b*ried an empty box, Walter."
The woman in the beige dress put her hand on Walter's arm.
He didn't look at her.
Eli turned slowly.
"What certificate?"
Walter said nothing.
"Dad." Eli's voice broke on the word.
"What certificate?"
Walter looked at his son for one long second.
Then he looked away.
That was when Rose reached into her coat pocket and held out a folded envelope.
Her hand was still shaking.
"I kept everything," she said quietly.
"Every letter they returned.
Every document.
I kept all of it."
Eli reached for the envelope.
