Ethan's champagne flute slipped from his fingers.
It shattered on the stone patio, but nobody looked at the broken glass.
Every eye moved between him and me.
"Mom—" His voice cracked.
"Mom, what happened to you?"
Vanessa straightened up slowly.
A small, confused frown crossed her face.
"You know this woman?"
Ethan crossed the lawn in six steps and dropped to one knee in front of me, his dress shirt soaking up the wet grass without a second thought.
"Who did this to you?" he said quietly.
I didn't answer.
I just looked at him.
Vanessa let out a short laugh.
"Ethan, she walked onto private property uninvited.
We simply asked her to leave."
"With a garden hose." The young server said it before he could stop himself.
The lawn went silent.
Ethan stood up slowly.
He turned to face Vanessa, and I watched something shift behind his eyes — something she had never seen before.
"That's my mother," he said.
Vanessa's smile didn't fall all at once.
It dissolved, piece by piece, as the words reached her.
Patricia Mitchell made a small sound behind her hand.
George Mitchell's face went the color of old ash.
But what none of them noticed — not Vanessa, not her parents, not a single guest on that lawn — was that my grocery tote was still pressed against my chest.
And my phone was still recording.
Every word.
