Chapter 2: What the De@d Lady Said

Nobody answered Emily's question.
Because Charles Bellamy had already crossed the room.
He stopped in front of her and held out his hand.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Give me the phone, sweetheart."
Emily took one step back.
Vincent's hand came up.
"Don't touch her."
The room went completely still.
The voicemail was still playing.
Sofia's voice filled the ballroom — thin, urgent, barely above a whisper.
"The papers Bellamy prepared are not what they look like.
The trust transfers everything.
Vince, please.
Don't let them take what we built.
Don't let them erase me."
Then a sound in the background.
A door.
A man's voice saying her name.
The recording ended.
Vincent turned slowly toward Charles.
"You told me she left willingly."
Charles didn't flinch.
"She was unstable.
You know that.
This proves nothing except that she was—"
"She was afraid." Vincent's voice dropped to almost nothing.
"She was afraid and she called me.
And you buried it."
Isabella hadn't moved.
Her fingers were still pressed against the silver pendant at her throat.
Emily was watching her.
"Mom," she whispered.
"That necklace."
Grace grabbed her daughter's arm.
But Emily had already remembered where she had seen it.
In a photograph.
In Sofia's bedroom.
The one they had cleared out three months after she disappeared.
That pendant had been in the box marked *personal effects — not to be removed.*
