Chapter 2: What the Note on the Fridge Said
"I've been leaving the lights on at night," Leo said quietly.
"So it looks like someone's home.
I didn't want you to worry."
Eight years old.
Alone in the dark for six nights.
And his biggest concern was protecting me.
I called the store manager back and asked her to stay with Leo until a neighbor could reach him.
Then I booked the first flight home.
I also called the police.
When I landed in Columbus, I went straight to the station and showed them everything — Gideon's texts telling me Leo was "doing great," the original beach reservation that had included all five of us, and the screenshot where Gideon had quietly removed Leo from the booking four days before they left.
The officer looked up from the screen.
"He knew he was leaving the child alone?"
"He planned it," I said.
When Gideon pulled into the driveway two days later, sunburned and laughing with Roger and Camila, two officers were waiting on the porch.
"Why are they here?" he demanded, looking straight at me.
I didn't say a word.
I placed three things on the table in front of him: the court summons, his messages, and Leo's canceled ticket.
His face went white.
Then Camila walked into the kitchen — and stopped.
She was staring at something on the fridge.
A note.
Written in Gideon's handwriting.
"Dad," she said slowly.
"This isn't what you told us."
