Chapter 2: What Diane Knew

Mark tore the tape from Lucy's mouth himself.
She gasped.
Then she started to cry — not from the cold, but from the look on Jack's face.
Seven months of believing his mother had chosen to leave him.
Seven months of a lie.
"How long?" Mark's voice was barely a sound.
Lucy couldn't answer.
She looked at Diane.
Diane stepped back toward the kitchen door.
"Don't you walk away from me." Mark turned around.
"How long has she been in there?"
"You don't understand what she was going to do—"
"She's the mother of my son!"
Jack was on the floor next to Lucy, his arms around her, his face buried in her coat.
Lucy held him with her bound wrists still pressed together, whispering his name over and over.
Mark grabbed his phone.
Diane moved fast.
"If you call anyone," she said quietly, "I will tell them what Lucy did.
And I have proof."
Mark froze.
Lucy's eyes closed.
Because she knew exactly what Diane meant.
And so did the one person none of them had noticed — the teenage kitchen worker standing just inside the back door, phone already in hand, who had heard every word.
