Chapter 1: The Laugh Behind the Door

"Don't go downstairs yet, Mr.
Vance…
please.
You need to hear what she's saying."
Julian Sterling froze in his tracks, his hand hovering inches from the polished brass handle of the bridal suite door.
The quiet urgency in those words instantly snuffed out the joyful noise from the hotel courtyard below.
Down in the main garden, a hundred and eighty guests were settling into their seats beneath arches of white hydrangeas and twinkling fairy lights.
The society photographers were already snapping test shots, Julian's construction firm partners were clinking champagne flutes, and his mother, Eleanor, was sitting in the front row, glowing with pride that her thirty-nine-year-old son was finally tying the knot.
In ninety minutes, Julian was supposed to marry Victoria Hayes.
Or so he thought.
Julian had built Sterling Developments from the ground up.
He had started fresh out of college, renovating small commercial storefronts, and built it into an empire of shopping plazas, corporate office towers, and luxury residential communities across the state.
He had wealth, a sprawling estate in Lake Forest, private drivers, tailored suits, and a calendar that rarely allowed him more than five hours of sleep a night.
But in that quiet hallway, none of his success crossed his mind.
He was thinking about Leo.
His eleven-month-old son was sleeping peacefully in the arms of Teresa, the nanny who had come to work for them when the baby was just six weeks old.
Teresa was forty-eight, soft-spoken, and deeply professional — the kind of woman who never gossiped or stepped out of line.
Seeing her standing there in the corridor, pale, with tears swimming in her eyes, made the color drain from Julian's face.
"What's wrong?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
Teresa pressed the sleeping baby closer to her chest and nodded toward the door of the adjacent dressing room, where Victoria was finalizing her bridal preparation.
The heavy wooden door was cracked open an inch.
From inside came Victoria's voice — sharp, impatient, and laced with a cold arrogance Julian had never heard from her before.
"I told you to stop calling my cell," she hissed into her phone.
"Everything gets finalized today.
After we sign the papers, Julian can't just walk away."
A knot tightened in Julian's stomach.
Teresa lowered her eyes, unable to look at him.
Victoria continued over the line, letting out a short, dismissive laugh.
"The estate is in his name, sure, but after the marriage license is filed, marital property laws kick in.
Plus, the company's valuation just hit nine figures.
You honestly think I'm going to throw that away because you're getting jealous?"
A brief pause followed on her end.
"No, I don't love him the way you think," she scoffed into the receiver.
"Julian is useful.
He's stable, he's generous, and best of all, he's so consumed by guilt over his long work hours that he tries to buy my happiness.
It's perfect."
Julian stopped breathing…

What will Julian do before a single guest finds out the truth?
