Chapter 2: We Saw You Go In

Grace's hands were shaking as she turned the lock.
She spun around, back pressed against the door, staring at me like I was something between a miracle and a threat.
"You're…
you've been awake this whole time?"
"Five days," I said.
My voice came out rough, like gravel dragged through sand.
"Every word.
Every visitor."
Her face crumpled.
"Then you heard what she said."
"I heard everything."
Grace pressed a fist to her mouth.
For a moment she couldn't speak.
Then: "Mr.
Moretti, there's something else.
Something I didn't say out loud because I wasn't sure." She stepped closer.
"Three days ago, a man came to this floor.
He wasn't a doctor.
He wasn't family.
He asked a nurse which room you were in and whether you were ever left alone at night."
My jaw tightened.
"Did you see his face?"
"Yes." She hesitated.
"He was wearing a visitor badge.
But the name on it…" Grace's voice dropped.
"It said Anthony Moretti."
The room went very still.
Anthony.
My cousin.
The man who had been standing outside this same door two days ago, talking about restructuring the family business like I was already in the ground.
"Grace." My eyes locked onto hers.
"Who else knows you've been coming into this room?"
She opened her mouth to answer.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
All the color left her face.
The screen showed one message.
No name.
Just four words.
*We saw you go in.*
