Chapter 2: The Ring That Broke Everything

"And?"

That one word.

Not "I'm sorry." Not "you're right." Not even a real answer.

Just "And?"

My hands stopped shaking.

Something colder moved in.

"Take it off, Savannah."

Ethan stepped between us.

"Claire.

Stop."

"I am completely calm."

"You don't look calm."

"That's because your best friend is wearing my dress on my wedding day and you are holding her wrist."

Diane made a small sound near the window.

I turned.

She was still holding her phone up.

Still recording.

"Are you filming this?"

Diane didn't lower it.

"Someone needs to document what you're doing to this family."

I almost laughed.

Then I saw it.

Savannah's left hand, half-hidden in the folds of my ivory skirt.

My grandmother's ring.

The oval sapphire with the small diamonds around it.

The one my mother had placed in my palm the night before and said, "She wore this for fifty-one years.

Now it's yours."

Savannah was wearing my grandmother's ring.

I looked at Ethan.

He knew.

He saw me see it.

He didn't say a word.

That was when I walked to the window, took out my phone, and dialed Marcus Webb — the one person who controlled the bridge loan keeping Ethan's company alive.
