Chapter 2: The Ring That Was Never Meant for Me

"And?" he said.
Like I was the one being unreasonable.
Something went very quiet inside me.
I looked at Savannah.
Still in my dress.
Still waiting for Ethan to fix it.
Then I looked at Diane.
Phone still in her hand.
A small smile she hadn't quite hidden.
"How long?" I asked.
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
"How long has she been up here?"
Silence.
"Ethan.
How long has Savannah been in this room?"
He looked away first.
That was my answer.
I walked to the dressing table.
My bouquet was there.
My veil.
And next to them, a small velvet box I hadn't left open.
I picked it up.
Empty.
"Where is my grandmother's ring?"
Nobody spoke.
I turned around.
Savannah's left hand moved — just slightly — behind the folds of the dress.
"Savannah."
Her chin lifted.
"It was just for the photos," Diane said quickly.
"We thought it would look beautiful with the gown.
You weren't using it yet—"
"Take it off." My voice didn't shake.
"Both of you.
Right now."
Ethan stepped forward.
"Claire, you're making this into something it isn't."
I looked at him for a long moment.
"No," I said.
"I'm finally seeing it for exactly what it is."
I picked up my phone.
There was one call I needed to make.
One name in my contacts that Ethan had never worried about — because he never knew what I actually controlled.
He was about to find out.
