Chapter 2: The Other Half of the Sun

Every person in that ballroom froze.

Julian's hand dropped from Elena's arm.

His face went white.

Richard Kensington stepped forward, his eyes never leaving the necklace.

His voice was low now — controlled, but shaking.

"Where did you get that?"

Elena touched it instinctively.

"It was given to me.

By the woman who raised me."

"Her name," Richard said.

"What was her name?"

"Rosa.

Rosa Bennett."

Eleanor made a sound like she'd been struck.

She reached out and grabbed her brother's sleeve with both hands.

Richard stood completely still for a long moment.

Then, in front of every senator, every CEO, every board member in that room — the most powerful man in Dallas slowly lowered himself to one knee.

Julian stepped forward, voice cracking.

"Sir — Mr.

Kensington — I'm so sorry, she had no idea what she was wearing, this is completely—"

"Be quiet." Richard didn't look at him.

He looked only at Elena.

"That necklace is the other half of mine."

He reached into his shirt and pulled out a chain.

On it hung a piece of silver — shaped like the other half of a sun.

Together, they made one complete piece.

Elena couldn't breathe.

"I've been looking for you," Richard whispered, "for thirty years."

Julian's career wasn't the only thing about to collapse.
