Chapter 2: The Folder

Douglas didn't rush.

He walked toward me slowly, like a man who had already won and knew it.

Brandon's smile was gone now.

He looked at the folder.

Then at Lauren.

Then back at Douglas.

"Who is this?" he asked.

"My attorney," I said.

Brandon let out a short laugh.

"Your attorney shows up at your job?

That's a little dramatic, Gwen."

Douglas stopped beside me.

He didn't look at Brandon when he spoke.

"Mr.

Foster.

I've been trying to reach you for eleven days."

Brandon's jaw tightened.

"About what?"

Douglas placed the folder against his chest and said, very calmly, "The paternity results."

The hallway went completely still.

Lauren made a sound.

Not a word.

Just a sound — small and broken — like something inside her had finally given way.

Brandon turned to her slowly.

"What is he talking about?"

She wouldn't look at him.

"Lauren." His voice dropped.

"What is he talking about?"

Her hands were shaking.

The baby bottle was still on the floor.

Neither of them had picked it up.

Douglas looked at me.

I gave him a small nod.

He opened the folder.

What Douglas showed Brandon next made his face go white.
