Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Part 2 — continued below ⬇️

I was sitting on a stone bench near the parking lot when Detective Hara found me.

"Ms.

Claire?" She held out her badge.

"We need to ask you a few questions.

When did you first notice unusual activity on your credit?"

"I didn't," I said.

"I had no idea anything was wrong."

She wrote something down without blinking.

Inside, through the tall vineyard windows, I could see Dad still talking to the other officer.

His hands were moving fast.

Mom had her arm around Madison, who was still in her wedding dress, mascara streaking down both cheeks.

Eric stood apart from all of them.

Watching.

Not comforting anyone.

Detective Hara turned a page in her notepad.

"Ms.

Claire, your name appears on three loan documents signed over the past fourteen months.

Two business lines of credit and one property refinance.

Did you authorize any of those?"

My stomach dropped.

"No."

"Do you recognize this signature?"

She held up a photocopy.

My name.

My date of birth.

My handwriting — almost.

But I had never signed that document in my life.

I looked up.

Through the window, Dad had stopped talking.

He was staring directly at me.

And for the first time that evening, he looked afraid.

Then my phone buzzed.

A number I didn't recognize.

I answered.

A voice I hadn't heard in six years said, "Claire.

Don't trust anything they tell you tonight.

There's something they've been hiding from you — something much older than the loan."
