Chapter 2: The Document on the Table

Claudia pressed her hand to her cheek and looked up from the floor.
Her eyes were wide — not with tears, but with fury.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life, old man."
Richard didn't move.
He held Ethan against his chest and looked down at her the way a man looks at something he has already decided to remove.
"Get up, Claudia."
Mark stepped forward.
"Dad, you can't just —"
"Sit down, Mark."
Something in Richard's voice stopped the room.
Mark sat.
Claudia grabbed the edge of the sofa and pulled herself up.
Her lipstick was smeared.
Her hand was still shaking.
But she lifted her chin and pointed a finger at Richard.
"I'm calling the police.
You h*t me in my own home."
"Go ahead," Richard said quietly.
"Call them."
He reached into his coat pocket and placed a folded document on the coffee table.
Claudia's eyes dropped to it.
The color left her face.
"Where did you get that?" she whispered.
Richard looked at Mark.
"Did you know she never signed the transfer?
This house has been in my name for eleven years, son.
Every single year, she told you it was hers."
Mark stared at the document.
Then at his wife.
Then back at his father.
"Claudia…
what is he talking about?"
Claudia's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then a small voice broke the silence.
"Grandpa," Ethan said.
"She burned my drawings too."
