Chapter 1: He Thought His Son Was Crying In Fear, Not Hiding Safely Behind A Locked Door With My Phone, Catching Every Word And Bl0w.

It was almost 1 a.m.
when I heard Ryan's truck pull into our driveway outside Dallas.
The front door slammed so hard the pictures on the wall shook.
"Emily!" he shouted.
I came downstairs and immediately smelled alcohol.
"Ryan, keep your voice down.
Noah is sleeping."
He threw his keys onto the floor.
"Don't tell me what to do in my own house."
"You're drunk.
Go to bed."
That made him furious.
He stepped toward me.
"You think you're better than me?"
"I never said that."
"Then stop looking at me like that."
I turned away, hoping to end the argument.
Ryan grabbed my arm.
"Look at me when I'm talking to you."
"Let go.
You're hurting me."
Then he sl@pped me.
I stumbled against the kitchen counter.
A small voice came from the hallway.
"Dad?"
My heart dropped.
Noah stood there in his pajamas, staring at us.
Ryan pointed at him.
"Go back to your room."
Noah didn't move.
I stepped between them.
"Leave him alone."
Ryan shoved me backward.
"Stop protecting him from everything!"
Noah started crying.
"Dad, stop!"
Ryan raised his hand again.
This time I covered my face.
But before he could h*t me, Noah suddenly ran upstairs.
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"See?
Even your son runs away from you."
I heard a bathroom door lock upstairs.
Then Ryan grabbed my wrist again.
"Tonight you're finally going to listen to me."
A few seconds later, faintly through the ceiling, I heard Noah whispering.
"Yes…
my dad is hurting my mom."
Ryan froze.
His face changed.
He released my wrist and looked toward the stairs.
"Who is he talking to?"
Then Noah's trembling voice grew louder from upstairs.
"Please hurry.
He h*t her again."
Ryan rushed toward the staircase.
But before he reached the first step, red and blue lights suddenly flashed across our living-room windows.
Someone pounded on the front door.
"Police!
Open the door!"
Ryan turned toward me, completely sober now.
And then Noah shouted something from upstairs that made even the officers outside go silent.
