Chapter 2: Forty-One Thousand Reasons

Part 2 👇
Her voice was shaking in a way I had never heard before.
Not upset.
Not angry.
Scared.
"David.
Listen to me.
Whatever your mother told you — it's not what you think."
I didn't say anything.
"David.
Are you there?"
"I'm here."
"You need to come home.
We need to talk before you do something you can't take back."
I looked down at the bank statement still sitting on the kitchen table.
Mom's careful handwriting in the margin.
Three dates.
Three amounts.
And one name.
Vanessa's.
"How much?" I asked.
Silence.
"Vanessa.
How much?"
She exhaled slowly.
"It's complicated."
"It's a number.
How much?"
Another pause.
Then, very quietly:
"Forty-one thousand."
The room felt like it tilted.
Forty-one thousand dollars.
From my mother's personal account.
Over fourteen months.
"She gave it to me willingly, David.
I never forced her—"
"She's eighty-two years old."
"She wanted to help—"
"She paid our mortgage when your business was failing.
And then you went back for more?"
Vanessa went quiet.
And in that silence, I finally understood why Mom had said she was hoping she was wrong.
She hadn't wanted to believe it either.
Then I heard something in the background on Vanessa's end of the call.
A voice.
A man's voice.
And Vanessa didn't know the call was still connected.
What David heard next — and what he found when he got home — is where this story truly begins.
