Chapter 2: The Name That Didn't Fit

Nobody answered Mara.
That was the worst part.
Owen set his beer on the side table like it had suddenly become too heavy to hold.
Claire pulled both kids back toward the hallway without saying a word.
The Christmas music kept playing.
Nobody moved to turn it off.
Graham stood completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Still.
Like a man who had been expecting this moment for a very long time.
"Mom." Mara stepped between them.
"What is happening right now?"
Elaine finally lowered the bowl.
Her hands were shaking.
"Where did you find him?" she whispered.
"A bakery.
He was alone.
I invited him.
Mom, you're scaring me—"
"You don't know who this is."
"His name is Graham Foster.
He—"
"Foster." Owen said the name like it tasted wrong.
"That's not the name we knew him by."
Graham closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked directly at Elaine.
"I wasn't going to say anything tonight.
I came because—" He stopped.
Started again.
"I just wanted to see the house."
"See the house," Owen repeated.
"That's what you call it."
"Owen." Elaine's voice cracked.
"Go get your father."
"Mom, what name?" Mara grabbed her mother's arm.
"What name did you know him by?"
May you like
But before Elaine could answer, slow footsteps came down the stairs.
And every person in that hallway stopped breathing.
