Chapter 1: The Night She Stayed

At the annual celebration for his corporation, my husband str*ck my shoulder and leaned close enough for me to hear him whisper, "Go home.

She's supposed to be beside me tonight." His mistress was standing only a few feet away in a tight crimson gown, pretending she hadn't heard anything.

I calmly smoothed my dress and answered, "No.

I think I'll stay for the announcement."

Ten minutes later, the chairman stepped onto the stage to announce the company's new majority owner.

Then he said my name.

I walked onto the stage, and my husband looked as if someone had just knocked the breath out of him.

"Go home," Jason muttered after h*tting my shoulder hard enough to make me stumble against a champagne table.

"She belongs beside me tonight."

Two hundred employees filled the sparkling ballroom at the Grandview Plaza Hotel for Meridian Dynamics' twentieth-anniversary celebration.

Conversations stopped for a few seconds before resuming in nervous whispers, the kind people use after seeing something cruel but lacking the courage to confront the person who caused it.

Chloe Price stood confidently beside my husband in a sleek scarlet gown, one hand looped around his arm as though she had every right to occupy that place.

As Meridian's communications director, she had spent the past several months appearing at Jason's side at conferences, private dinners, and supposedly important "strategy retreats."

Tonight, she was wearing the diamond earrings I had only recently realized were missing from my jewelry box.

She looked at me with a dismissive smile.

"Helena, perhaps tonight isn't really the right time for a domestic disagreement."

My shoulder continued throbbing beneath my blue satin dress.

I quietly adjusted the strap, lifted my chin, and looked straight at my husband.

"No.

I think I'll stay for the announcement."

Jason's smile immediately tightened.

He was Meridian's chief strategy officer, and for the last three weeks, he had been proudly telling everyone that tonight would be the night his promotion was announced.

He fully expected to become president.

He also believed I spent my days quietly managing a modest inheritance and volunteering for an arts foundation.

He had never once bothered to ask why my late mother's investment firm occupied three entire floors of an office building in Minneapolis.

He preferred me that way.

The quieter, less threatening version of me made him feel important.

"The announcement is for executives," he said coldly.

"Not decorative wives."

Chloe gave a soft laugh beside him.

Then I noticed Chairman Walter Higgins across the ballroom.

His eyes met mine.

He subtly touched two fingers against his cuff.

Our signal.

The signal we had agreed on earlier that afternoon, after the final closing documents had been officially signed.

Standing beside Walter were Meridian's general counsel and the forensic accountant who had spent six weeks following suspicious vendor payments that had been approved by Jason.

I picked up an untouched glass of sparkling water.

"Enjoy the next ten minutes," I told my husband.

His expression shifted immediately.

He reached out and grabbed my wrist.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

I calmly held his gaze.

"It means you should watch very carefully."

Suddenly, the ballroom lights dimmed, leaving the stage illuminated beneath a brilliant blue glow.

Walter stepped up to the microphone.

He began by thanking the employees who had kept Meridian Dynamics running through eighteen months of increasing debt, canceled contracts, and a disastrous expansion.

Jason finally released my wrist and straightened his blazer.

He was already wearing the victorious expression of a man who believed his promotion was guaranteed.

"Tonight," Walter announced, "we want to recognize the investor whose capital protected eight hundred jobs and helped eliminate our most dangerous debt."

The entire ballroom fell silent.

"The acquisition officially closed today.

Vanguard Capital now holds fifty-eight percent of Meridian Dynamics."

Jason was the first person to start applauding.

Then Walter turned toward me.

"Please welcome Vanguard Capital's founder and the new majority owner of Meridian Dynamics...

Ms.

Helena Drake."

I slowly set my glass down on the table.

Then I started walking toward the stage.

A gasp came from somewhere behind me.

Chloe's hand immediately slipped away from Jason's arm.

And my husband...

He looked like he had suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

What happens when Jason realizes Helena owns the company he was about to betray her in?
