Chapter 1: The Woman Who Chose the Wrong Stranger

At our wedding gala, I caught my fiancé kissing another woman while both our families celebrated around us.

He still had the nerve to whisper, "Don't make a scene." I didn't cry.

I kissed the first stranger I saw and introduced him as "my husband." I thought I was only trying to humiliate my fiancé—until I discovered who that man really was and why he already knew so much about me.

**PART 1**

"If you're going to cheat on me, at least have the decency not to do it at the exact same party where our families are raising a glass to our wedding."

I didn't say those words out loud.

Not yet.

My name is Daniela Arriaga, I am thirty years old, and that evening I was standing in a private event hall in downtown Chicago, smiling politely at real estate tycoons, retired politicians, my parents' long-time friends, and strangers who looked as though they knew down to the exact dollar how much my floor-length gown had cost.

The dinner was celebrating the upcoming union between my family and the Vance family.

Officially, it was an engagement party.

In reality, everyone in the room understood the bottom line: my marriage to Mateo Vance would merge two massive corporate entities specializing in commercial construction, urban development, and infrastructure.

For two years, my mother, Teresa, had been repeating the exact same sentence to me: "You aren't just marrying a man, Daniela.

You are securing our family's entire future."

And I had been dutiful enough to mistake heavy financial obligation for love.

Mateo was charming whenever he had an audience.

He knew how to smile warmly, remember executive names, throw his arm around my father's shoulders as if he were his own son, and whisper gentle things in my ear with just enough tenderness to convince the room that he adored me.

Which was precisely why it caught my attention when he slipped out of the ballroom right in the middle of his father's toast.

I followed him down a quiet, dimly lit side corridor that led to a private terrace.

And that was where I saw him.

Mateo had his hand resting on the waist of Selina Reed, the daughter of a major primary investor who had recently injected capital into his firm.

They weren't discussing quarterly projections.

They were kissing.

It wasn't an impulsive, rushed mistake either.

It was slow, lingering, and intimately familiar.

Something fundamental inside me shattered.

But I didn't burst into tears.

I glanced around frantically, searching for air, an exit, or anything that would keep me from having to walk back into that main dining room and pretend I hadn't seen a thing.

That was when I spotted a solitary man standing near a floor-to-ceiling glass window at the far end of the terrace.

He was tall, dressed in a dark suit, carrying a cold, detached expression.

I had no idea who he was.

And in that split second, I committed the reckless act that would alter the course of my life.

I walked directly up to him.

"I need you to do me a favor," I whispered.

I didn't wait for his answer.

I grabbed him firmly by his lapels, pulled him down, and kissed him on the mouth.

When I pulled back, Mateo was already standing at the threshold of the terrace, staring at us.

His face rapidly shifted from total bewilderment to sheer, venomous rage.

"What the hell are you doing, Daniela?!" Mateo demanded, stepping forward.

I could feel the eyes of several guests through the glass doors.

I turned, offered Mateo a serene smile, and said, "Sorry, darling.

I was just looking for my husband."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Mateo took a sharp step toward us.

"Your husband?!

Have you completely lost your mind?!"

I was on the verge of admitting that yes, perhaps I had, when the stranger's hand firmly and comfortably settled around my waist.

"I believe the lady made herself very clear," the stranger's deep voice echoed smoothly.

Mateo recognized him before I did.

His arrogant posture collapsed, his face instantly draining of color.

"Sterling..." Mateo muttered, his jaw tightening.

The stranger offered a faint, razor-sharp smile.

Julian Sterling.

I had heard that name mentioned in corporate boardrooms a hundred times.

He was the managing partner of a private equity group feared across the entire Midwest business sector.

He was the exact man my father had warned me about: "You can negotiate with Sterling, but the one thing you must never do is attempt to double-cross him."

Mateo clenched his fists.

"This isn't over."

"For her, it appears it is," Julian replied calmly.

Mateo turned and stormed off into the crowd under a wave of hushed whispers.

The moment we were left alone on the terrace, I tried to take a step back and untangle myself from his grip.

"I am so sorry.

That was foolish and completely unprofessional."

"It was certainly very public," Julian remarked, his dark eyes studying my face.

"It won't happen again," I said, smoothing my dress.

"That depends entirely on you," Julian replied softly.

Two days later, a thick manila envelope arrived at my high-rise apartment.

Inside was an address, a time, and a business card bearing his name.

I went.

Julian received me in a corner executive office on Michigan Avenue and got straight to the point.

"Your former fiancé is currently telling your social circle that you suffered an emotional breakdown at the engagement party.

Your mother is frantically trying to orchestrate a quiet reconciliation.

And the Vance family desperately needs this marriage to proceed to cover their debt liquidity."

"And what does any of that have to do with you, Mr.

Sterling?" I asked.

"You made me a prominent part of the scandal," he stated flatly, sliding a leather-bound folder across his mahogany desk toward me.

"So I am proposing we finish what you started."

I stared at him, confused.

"For the next few months, we will publicly pretend to be together," Julian explained.

"You receive immediate protection from Mateo, his family, and your parents' pressure.

In exchange, I secure a massive strategic advantage over the Vance Group's market position."

"You want us to fake a relationship?"

"I want the business world to believe that you didn't leave Mateo out of heartbreak," Julian said, leaning forward.

"I want them to know you left him because you chose someone infinitely better."

He was arrogant.

Cold.

Dangerous.

And he was the only option on the table that didn't involve crawling back to the man who had just humiliated me.

"Why me?" I asked softly.

Julian went quiet for a long moment.

Then he said, "Because years ago, you saved my life, Daniela.

You just don't remember it yet."

And at that moment, I could not have imagined that accepting his proposal would do far more than just destroy my engagement — it would plunge me into a war capable of tearing my own family apart...

What did Julian mean when he said Daniela once saved his life?

And what will Mateo do now that he's been publicly humiliated?
