Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Selina didn't move from the bed.
She just sat there, smiling, like she had already won.
I didn't scream.
I didn't cry.
I stood in the doorway and looked at her very calmly.
"Get out of my house," I said.
She laughed.
"Your house?
Brandon owns this house.
I'll be moving in by the end of the week."
"Brandon doesn't own anything," I said.
"His name isn't on a single deed.
Mine is."
Her smile flickered — just for a second.
Then Brandon appeared at the top of the stairs behind me.
He looked at Selina, then at me, and his expression shifted from confident to something I had never seen on his face before.
Uncertainty.
"Jessi, listen—"

"Alexander Vance's attorney called me twenty minutes ago.
The folder he gave me tonight?
It's already been forwarded to my lawyer."
Brandon's jaw tightened.
"You don't have a lawyer."
"I do now."
Selina stood up slowly.
"You have nothing.
You signed everything over.
We made sure of it."
I looked at her.
"Then why does the controlling share of Sterling Logistics still show my signature as the active holder of record?
Why did your attorney call Brandon three times tonight in a panic?"
The room went very quiet.
Then Selina's phone lit up on the nightstand.
She glanced at the screen — and the color drained from her face.
It was a name I didn't recognize.
But Brandon clearly did.
He crossed the room in three steps and grabbed the phone before she could answer it.
"Don't pick up," he said through his teeth.
"That's not supposed to be calling yet."
---
What secret was that phone call about — and who was on the other end?
What Jessi uncovered next put the entire Sterling family at risk of losing everything.
