Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Lily's finger hovered over the play button.
My mother's eyes stayed locked on the phone.
Her jaw tightened.
For the first time in my life, I watched her search for words and find none.
"Lily." Her voice came out lower than before.
"Turn that off."
"Why?" Lily said.
"You told me it was the truth.
You said the whole family already knew."
That landed hard.
My aunt set down her cup.
My brother turned away from the grill.
"Knew what?" I said.
"What did she tell you?"
Lily looked at me.
Then at Noah.
Noah was still staring at his plate.
Still holding my hand under the table.
His grip hadn't loosened once.
Lily pressed play.
My mother's voice came through the speaker, clear and calm, as though she were discussing something perfectly reasonable.
"He's not like the other grandchildren, Lily.
He never will be.
Some things can't be fixed.
The sooner your mother accepts that, the better for everyone."
The yard went completely still.
Even the kids near the fence stopped running.
I felt Noah's hand go rigid in mine.
He had heard it.
Every word.
Then my father slowly pushed back his chair and stood up.
And the expression on his face told me this wasn't the first time he had heard those words either.
