Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Was Supposed to Say

Mason's voice didn't waver.

"A few weeks ago, I couldn't sleep.

I went to get water.

Grandma Linda and Uncle Jake were in the kitchen.

They didn't see me."

The ballroom was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

"Uncle Jake said Mom could never find out.

Grandma said she never would."

Jake pushed back his chair.

"Mason, buddy, that's enough—"

"They were talking about a letter," Mason continued.

"From someone called Richard."

The color left Jake's face completely.

My mother's hand shot to her mouth.

I didn't understand yet.

But everyone on that stage clearly did.

"Mason," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Who is Richard?"

My son looked at me with those steady brown eyes.

"He said Richard is your real dad, Mom.

Not Grandpa.

And that you were never supposed to know."

The room erupted — not in laughter this time.

In shock.

I turned to my mother.

Her eyes were wet.

Her lips were moving but nothing came out.

Jake took one step toward Mason.

Then stopped.

Because someone near the back of the ballroom had quietly risen from their seat.

An older man.

Gray at the temples.

A face I had never seen before in my life.

But the way he was looking at me —

It wasn't the look of a stranger.
