Chapter 2: She Knows About Selina

PART 2

Julian was still charging toward me when I said the first word.

He stopped dead at the edge of the pool — frozen — like a man who suddenly realized he had no idea what I knew.

And that terrified him more than anything I could have screamed.

"Two years ago," I said into the microphone, my voice completely calm, "while I was in the hospital recovering from giving birth to our son…

Julian was not sitting beside me."

A ripple moved through the crowd.

Someone gasped.

"He told me he had an emergency work meeting." I let that land.

"There was no meeting."

Julian's brother Marcus went completely still.

Selina — perfect, elegant Selina — slowly turned her face away from the crowd.

That was the moment I knew I had the right people looking guilty.

"I found the hotel receipt three weeks ago," I continued.

"I found the messages.

And I found the name."

Julian lunged forward.

"Stop — you don't understand what you're—"

"I understand everything, Julian."

The microphone was steady in my hand.

My voice did not shake once.

Then my mother-in-law stood up from her chair near the garden.

Her face was ash-white.

She looked not at me — but directly at Marcus.

And she said four words so quietly I almost missed them.

"She knows about Selina."

What really happened in that hotel room — and why does his own mother look guilty?

The full truth is darker than anyone at that party expected.
