Chapter 2: What the Spoon Was Used to Sign

— Part 2 —

Tessa turned around anyway.

A woman stood in the corridor doorway.

Small.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a Vesper kitchen uniform that didn't quite fit.

Tessa had never seen her before.

"Who are you?"

The woman didn't answer.

She looked at the spoon in Tessa's hand and her eyes filled.

"That belonged to Moses," she whispered.

Tessa's chest tightened.

"How do you know that name?"

"Because I worked beside him.

Forty years ago.

Before they took everything from him."

"Who took—"

"Keep your voice down." The woman stepped closer.

"The spoon didn't end up in this kitchen by accident, child.

Someone put it there tonight.

Someone who knew you'd find it."

Tessa looked toward the dining room.

Damian was still at his table.

"Did Damian—"

"Not him." The woman shook her head.

"The one you need to worry about is the one who's been watching you for nineteen months."

Tessa went cold.

Nineteen months.

The exact length of time she'd worked at Vesper.

She looked back at her phone.

The unknown number.

Her mother's photo.

The name in the second message — a name she hadn't spoken aloud since she was fourteen years old.

Her grandfather's silent partner.

The one her mother said had vanished the same week Moses d*ed.

The woman touched Tessa's arm.

"Don't give Damian your answer tonight.

Not until you know what that spoon was used to sign."

"Sign?"

But footsteps were already coming down the corridor.

---

What was Moses Rowe's spoon really used to sign — and who has been watching Tessa since the day she walked into Vesper?
