Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

We barely slept that night.

At 8:45 the next morning, Alex and I pulled up to Uncle Robert's house.

There were already six cars in the driveway.

When we walked in, the entire family was seated around the dining table like a tribunal.

Teresa sat at the head.

Arthur was beside her.

Patricia had a folder in front of her.

A folder.

Teresa didn't even greet us.

She looked straight at Alex and said, "Sit down.

We have things to settle."

Alex didn't sit.

"Say what you need to say, Mom."

Teresa folded her hands.

"This house — the one you and Mariana live in — was purchased with Vance family money.

Your father's money.

And we want it back in the family name."

I felt the floor shift under me.

"That house is in both our names," Alex said quietly.

"It has been for four years."

Patricia slid the folder across the table.

"Read page three."

Alex opened it.

I watched his face go still.

"Where did you get this?" he said.

Teresa's voice was calm.

"Your grandfather's estate was never fully settled.

There are claims on that property that predate your marriage."

She paused, then looked directly at me for the first time.

"Mariana, if you sign a voluntary transfer, we can keep this civil.

If you don't…" She let the sentence hang in the air like a threat.

That was when Arthur's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen — and his face went white.

What's on that document — and who just called Arthur?

What Mariana finds out next will shock you.
