Chapter 2: The Morning She Brought Lilies

Lucas stared at him.
"Sir…
are you sure?
Mrs.
Mercer is right outside—"
"That is exactly why we have very little time," Jonathan said.
"My phone.
Inside the drawer.
Don't let anyone see you."
Lucas glanced at the door, then slipped the phone into Jonathan's trembling hand.
The call lasted four minutes.
When it ended, Jonathan closed his eyes and exhaled slowly.
"She thinks I'm already gone," he whispered.
"Let her think that."
The next morning, Victoria arrived at the hospital in a cream blazer, smiling at every nurse she passed.
She carried flowers — white lilies.
The kind people bring to funerals.
She pushed open the door to Jonathan's room.
His attorney, Gerald Foss, was standing beside the bed.
A second man Jonathan didn't recognize stood near the window, holding a small recording device.
Victoria's smile didn't fall immediately.
It froze.
"What is this?" she said.
Gerald set a document on the bedside table and slid it toward her.
"Mrs.
Mercer, my client has made some significant changes to his estate.
He has also filed a formal report with the Chicago PD regarding the source of his cardiac deterioration."
Victoria's eyes dropped to the document.
Her face went pale.
"You can't prove anything," she said quietly.
Jonathan opened his eyes and looked directly at her.
"Raymond already did."
