Chapter 2: The Message on the Floor

Heloise scrambled backward, but Aldric turned away from her and knelt beside Thora.
“Tell me everything,” he said softly.
“What did she make you do?”
Thora gripped his sleeve.
“She made me sign papers.
She said if I didn’t, you would never come home.”
Aldric’s face went pale.
“What papers?”
“She kept them in the locked drawer,” Thora whispered.
Heloise suddenly lunged toward the sideboard.
“She’s confused!
She’s only five!”
Aldric reached the drawer first.
Inside lay an envelope bearing his name, several property documents, and a legal petition claiming he had abandoned his daughter.
“I never signed this,” he said, staring at the signature.
One of the dinner guests lowered her eyes.
Another quietly moved toward the door.
Then Heloise’s phone lit up on the floor.
Aldric picked it up before she could reach it.
A new message appeared:
“Did he suspect the guardianship transfer?
Once the girl is removed, the house belongs to us.”
Aldric slowly looked around the table.
“Us?”
No one answered—until Thora pointed at one of the silent guests and whispered, “Daddy…
that’s the man who made me practice your signature.”
