Chapter 2: The Call He Wasn't Expecting

Part 2 ⬇️

Charles answered the call.

I watched him through the open doorway, still on my knees on the porch, one hand pressed to my stomach.

His face changed the moment he heard the voice on the other end.

The folder he'd been holding slipped from his fingers.

"That's not possible," he said.

"I have the documents right here."

A pause.

"What do you mean her name is on the trust?"

Courtney stopped laughing.

She crossed the room and grabbed his arm.

"Charles.

What's happening?"

He pulled away from her.

His voice dropped to something close to a whisper.

"Since when?

She never told me—"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

When he looked up and saw me watching him through the doorway, something shifted in his expression.

Not guilt.

Something colder than that.

He ended the call.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Courtney walked to the doorway and looked down at me on the porch.

"You planned this," she said.

"You knew we were coming."

"I didn't have to plan anything," I said.

"Lucas did it for me.

Three years ago."

Charles picked the folder up off the floor.

His hands weren't steady.

"There's still the matter of the signature," he said quietly.

That was when I heard a second siren.

And a car I didn't recognize pulled up behind the police cruiser.

---

What Victoria found out about that signature — and who stepped out of that second car — changed everything.
