Chapter 2: The Number I Was Told Never to Forget

Part 2 ⬇️
The first person I called wasn't a friend.
It wasn't a doctor.
It was Owen's lawyer.
I had memorized that number the day Owen made me promise to keep it close.
"Just in case," he'd said.
I hadn't understood what he meant then.
I understood now.
I was still on the porch, one hand pressed to my stomach, when Walter opened the front door again.
"You're being dramatic," he said.
"Get up."
"My water broke, Dad."
He stared at me for a moment.
Then he looked back at Tatum.
"Call her a cab," he said.
Not an ambulance.
A cab.
Tatum had already lost interest.
She was scrolling her phone, still wearing my robe, leaning against the doorframe like none of it was her problem.
That was when a car pulled up to the curb — fast, like it had already been on its way.
Owen's lawyer, Richard Hale, stepped out.
Behind him, a second car.
Two men I didn't recognize in dark jackets.
Walter's face changed.
"What is this?" he said.
"Who called you?"
Richard didn't answer Walter.
He walked straight to me, crouched down, and said quietly, "We need to get you to the hospital.
But first — did he touch you?"
"Yes," I said.
Richard stood up slowly and turned to face my father.
"Mr.
Voss," he said.
"Step away from this property.
You have no legal standing here.
None."
Walter laughed — but it came out wrong.
Thin.
Uncertain.
"I'm her father—"
"You're a trespasser," Richard said.
"And we have everything on record."
Walter went very still.
And for the first time since Owen died, so did I.
---
What was on that record — and what had Owen quietly put in place before the accident?

What Richard revealed next made Walter's face go white.
