I didn't sleep that night.
I lay beside Maya in the dark, listening to her breathe, counting every shallow exhale like it was something fragile I might lose.
The champagne laughter from the patio finally went quiet around midnight.
Then the house settled into silence.
At 6 a.m.
I walked downstairs.
Victoria was already at the kitchen table, dressed perfectly, sipping coffee like she owned the morning.
Julian leaned against the counter, scrolling his phone — my watch catching the light on his wrist.
"You're up early," Mother said pleasantly.
"I saw the documents," I said.
The coffee cup stopped halfway to her lips.
Julian looked up slowly.
"Maya signed willingly," he said.
"She was confused while you were gone.
We were protecting the family assets."
"She signed with bruises on her arms, Julian."
The room went very still.
Mother set her cup down.
When she looked at me, something cold moved behind her eyes — not guilt.
Calculation.
"You've been away a long time, Daniel," she said quietly.
"You don't know everything that happened here."
"Then tell me."
She smiled.
"Some things," she said, "are better left between family."
Julian's phone buzzed on the counter.
He glanced at the screen and his face changed — just for a second.
He flipped it face-down before I could read the name.
But I had already seen it.
It was Maya's doctor.
