Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Counter

Iris was still screaming when I spoke.
My voice came out low.
Steady.
Nothing like the trembling daughter Diane had managed for thirty-two years.
"Lower your voice.
You just terrified a seven-day-old baby."
Diane blinked.
For a half-second, something flickered across her face — surprise, maybe.
Then her jaw tightened.
"Don't you dare talk to me like that.
I am your mother."
"Then act like one," I said.
"You walked into my home without knocking, one week after I gave birth alone, and your first words were a screaming accusation.
You haven't looked at Iris once."
"That is not the point —"
"It is exactly the point."
I shifted Iris higher on my shoulder, keeping my eyes on Diane.
My heart was hammering.
But my hands were not shaking.
That was new.
Rachel appeared in the doorway behind her.
I hadn't even heard a second car pull up.
"Elena, you need to stop being so selfish," Rachel said, stepping inside uninvited.
"Mom has been crying for a week over this."
I looked at my sister.
Then I walked calmly to the kitchen drawer and pulled out a manila envelope.
I set it on the counter without a word.
Diane stared at it.
Something in her expression shifted — and for the first time in my life, I watched my mother look genuinely afraid.
"What is that?" she whispered.
I didn't answer.
