Chapter 2: The Message on the Lit Screen

**PART 2**
That night, I sat on the edge of the condo's guest bed and stared at the wall.
I wasn't sad.
I was calculating.
Julian thought I had no memory.
That meant he had no reason to be careful around me.
So I started watching.
The next morning, I found a stack of papers on the kitchen counter.
Medical forms.
Insurance documents.
And at the bottom — a legal envelope with Julian's name printed beside Clara's as **next of kin**.
Not husband.
Next of kin.
I slid it back exactly where I found it.
That afternoon, Clara's doctor stopped Julian in the hallway outside her room.
I stood just around the corner, close enough to hear.
"The estate transfer is nearly finalized," the doctor said quietly.
"Clara signed the last documents two days ago."
Julian nodded.
"Good.
She needs to have peace of mind."
"And the other matter — the one her attorney flagged?"
Julian's voice dropped so low I almost missed it.
"That won't be a problem."
I pressed my back against the wall, heart hammering.
*What estate?
What transfer?
What problem?*
I walked back to the condo alone.
On the kitchen table sat Julian's phone, screen lit up with a message he hadn't seen yet.
I read it before the screen went dark.
It was from someone saved only as **"R."**
*She's getting worse faster than expected.
Are you sure the timeline still works?*
My hands went cold.
This was never just about a dying woman and a promise.
There was something far darker underneath — and I was the only one who didn't know what it was yet.

Jessi is still pretending.
But what she uncovered next put her in real danger.
