Chapter 2: The Empty Steps

Evelyn was on her feet before I finished speaking.

She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the doors.

"What men?" she demanded.

"How many?"

"Two," I said.

"Mom told me to run.

She said don't stop, don't look back."

Evelyn pushed through the ballroom doors into the cold night air.

The street was empty.

No Sarah.

No one.

Just wet pavement and the sound of distant traffic.

"Where was she standing?" Evelyn's voice cracked.

I pointed to the bottom of the steps.

"Right there.

She was right there."

Evelyn turned to the doorman.

"Did you see a woman?

Dark coat, early thirties?"

He nodded slowly.

"She was here.

Then a black car pulled up.

Two men got out.

She didn't look like she wanted to go."

Evelyn's hand tightened around mine.

"Did you see the plates?"

"No, ma'am.

It happened fast."

I started to cry.

"They took her, didn't they?"

Evelyn knelt down in front of me, both hands on my face.

"Listen to me.

I will find your mother.

I promise you that."

But when she stood up, her phone was already in her hand — and her face had gone completely white.

She was staring at a text message from a number she clearly recognized.

She read it twice.

Then she looked at me with an expression I had never seen on an adult before.

It wasn't just fear.

It was guilt.

What did that message say — and why did Evelyn look guilty?
