Chapter 2: The Name He Never Knew

— PART 2 —

Victor didn't move.

He just stared at Noah.

The little boy stared back, still holding his arms out.

One of the security guards stepped forward.

Victor raised his hand and stopped him.

"Don't."

His voice came out different.

Quieter.

Like something inside him had shifted.

I moved between Noah and Victor.

"He doesn't know what he's saying," I told him.

"He's only three.

He calls every man that."

Victor looked at me slowly.

"Does he."

It wasn't a question.

He walked to the photograph on the wall.

He reached up and took it down.

His hands were steady but his jaw was tight.

"Elena never told me," he said quietly.

"She never said a word."

"Mr.

Moretti—"

"How long have they been here?"

"Almost a year."

"Alone?"

"They had me."

He turned around.

His eyes moved across the six children standing in a line.

Daniel had stepped in front of the younger ones.

Lucas hadn't looked away from Victor once.

Then Victor's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression went cold in a way I had never seen before.

He rejected the call.

Then he looked at me and said four words that made my bl00d run cold.

"They cannot find them."

Before I could ask who he meant — the door at the top of the stairs opened again.

And someone else walked in.

---

What Victor said next — and who just walked through that door — changes everything.
