Chapter 2: The Girl Who Looked Like Him

Part 2 ⬇️
I knocked.
The coughing stopped.
Silence.
Then small footsteps crossed the floor.
The door opened three inches — held by a chain.
One gray-green eye looked up at me.
The little girl didn't speak.
She just stared.
Like she already knew who I was.
"Is your mother home?" My voice came out quieter than I intended.
She didn't answer.
She turned her head back into the apartment.
"Mommy.
There's a man."
A long pause.
Then Elena's voice, thin and careful.
"What does he look like?"
The girl studied my face for a moment.
"Like me," she said simply.
I heard something fall inside the apartment.
A chair.
A glass.
I couldn't tell.
Then Elena's voice again — barely above a whisper.
"Don't open the door."
But the little girl didn't move away.
She kept looking at me through that three-inch gap with those eyes I saw in the mirror every morning.
I crouched down to her level.
"What's your name?"
She hesitated.
Just a second.
"Gia."
My chest tightened in a way no cardiac episode ever could.
From inside the apartment, I heard Elena begin to cry.
Quietly.
Like someone who had been dreading this moment for six years and had finally run out of time to stop it.
I pressed my hand flat against the door frame.
"Elena." My voice was steady.
"I'm not leaving."
Another silence.
Then she said four words that told me everything I needed to know about why she had run.
