Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

---

I walked straight to my car with Chloe in my arms.

Barbara followed us to the driveway.

"You're being dramatic.

She's fine.

Children need boundaries."

"She was barefoot.

Outside.

Alone.

In the dark."

"She's not made of glass."

I buckled Chloe into her seat and turned around.

"How many times, Barbara?"

She didn't answer.

That was my answer.

My husband finally came outside.

He stopped a few feet away, hands in his pockets.

"Let's just go inside and talk about this calmly."

"Calmly."

"You're scaring her."

I looked at Chloe.

She had her face pressed against the window, watching her father with the saddest eyes I had ever seen.

"She's not scared of me," I said.

I plugged the memory card into my phone.

My husband stepped forward.

"Don't—"

The first clip loaded.

Chloe.

Alone on the porch.

Knocking on the back door.

The timestamp said three weeks ago.

The second clip loaded.

Same porch.

Same child.

Different night.

Barbara's voice on the recording: *"Stay out there until you stop crying."*

My husband put his hand on my arm.

"I was going to tell you—"

I pulled away.

Then my phone lit up with an incoming call.

A number I didn't recognize.

But Chloe whispered a name that stopped my heart.
