Chapter 2: The Photograph in the Torn Pocket

The groom stepped down from the altar.
His legs were shaking.
The little girl didn't move.
She just stood there in the middle of the aisle, clutching her baby sister, tears streaming down her face.
He knelt in front of her and whispered, "How did you get here?
Where is your mother?"
The little girl's lip trembled.
"Mama didn't wake up this morning."
The room erupted.
Gasps.
Whispers.
A woman near the back burst into tears.
The bride grabbed the groom's arm and hissed through a locked smile, "Don't you dare.
Not here.
Not in front of everyone."
He pulled his arm free without looking at her.
The little girl reached into the pocket of her torn dress and pulled out a crumpled photograph.
She held it up with both hands.
"Mama said if anything happened…
to find you.
She said you would remember this."
The groom took the photo.
His hands went still.
It was a picture of him.
Younger.
Smiling.
Holding a newborn baby in a hospital room.
Standing beside him was a woman the bride clearly recognized.
Because her face went from pale…
to ash.
"Where did she get that?" the bride whispered to no one.
That was the moment everyone realized this wedding had been built on a secret someone had worked very hard to bury.
