Chapter 2: The Door She Almost Closed

Lily looked up at him with those steady blue eyes.

"Because Mama won't ask for help.

Ever.

She says we don't need anyone."

Dominic said nothing.

He got out of the car first.

The building's front door opened before they reached it.

Sophia stood in the doorway in a worn grey sweater, her face white with panic — then she saw Lily, and the relief lasted exactly one second.

Then she saw Dominic.

She went very still.

"Lily.

Come here."

Lily walked to her mother quickly.

"I'm sorry, Mama.

I just wanted to—"

"Inside."

"But—"

"Inside.

Now."

Lily disappeared through the door.

Sophia didn't move.

She kept her body in the frame like a wall.

Six years.

She looked the same.

Thinner.

Tired in a way she hadn't been before.

But her eyes were exactly as Dominic remembered — steady, sharp, and giving nothing away.

"You have no business being here," she said quietly.

"She came to me."

"I know what she did.

Go home, Dominic."

She started to close the door.

His hand didn't stop it.

His voice did.

"Sophia.

She has the crease."

Sophia froze.

Three seconds of complete silence.

When she turned back, something in her face had shifted — something she was fighting hard to keep controlled.

"Don't," she said.

One word.

Barely a whisper.

"I need to know."

"You don't get to need anything from me."

Then, from inside the apartment, Lily called out in a small, tired voice.

"Mama?

The man looks sad.

Can he come in?"

What Sophia said next — and what Dominic found inside that apartment — changes everything.
