Chapter 1: The Boy Who Knew My Brother's Name

A Bruised Little Boy Burst Into Our Police Station Begging For Help—And The Man Chasing Him Froze When He Saw Me.
I was finishing paperwork when the front doors flew open.
A boy who looked about eight stumbled inside, barefoot and trembling.
"Please lock the door!"
Purple bruises covered his arms, and one side of his face was swollen.
Before I could reach him, a man charged through the entrance.
"Evan!
Get back here!"
The boy screamed and hid behind my chair.
I stepped between them.
"Sir, stop right there."
The man raised both hands.
"I'm his father.
He ran away."
Behind me, Evan whispered, "He's lying."
The man's expression changed instantly.
"Don't listen to him.
He gets confused."
I looked down at the bruises on Evan's wrists.
"Did you do this to him?"
"Of course not."
Evan grabbed the back of my uniform.
"He locks me downstairs when Mom goes to work."
The man suddenly moved toward us.
Two officers immediately blocked him.
"Evan," I said softly, "who is he?"
"My stepdad.
His name is Ryan."
Ryan shouted, "That kid destroys everything!
Ask his mother!"
Evan started crying harder.
"She doesn't know."
"Know what?" I asked.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small house key tied to a plastic hospital bracelet.
Ryan's face went blank.
"Give me that."
Evan stepped back.
"My real dad gave this to me before he disappeared."
Something about the bracelet caught my attention.
I took it carefully and read the faded name.
My hands began to shake.
It belonged to my younger brother, Daniel, who had vanished nine years earlier.
Ryan suddenly lunged toward the boy.
"Don't let him say another word!"
The officers forced Ryan against the wall as Evan stared up at me.
Then he whispered, "Daniel told me if anything happened, I had to find his brother."
I could barely breathe.
"How do you know who his brother is?"
May you like
Evan pointed directly at my badge.
"Because he said his brother became a police officer."
