Chapter 2: The Letter Behind the Ring

Natalie held Madison's arm with both hands.
"You're not going anywhere."
Madison's voice dropped to something cold and quiet.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
"Then explain it to me." Natalie's eyes filled.
"Because my sister is g\*ne and her wedding ring is supposedly in that box.
So you tell me right now — how did it get there?"
Madison said nothing.
Adrian opened the cedar panel.
The red Cartier case sat exactly where Claire had always kept it.
His hands were shaking as he lifted it.
Inside was the ring.
Claire's ring.
The one the police said was lost in the crash.
But that wasn't all.
Beneath the ring was a folded piece of paper.
Adrian opened it slowly.
It was a letter.
In Claire's handwriting.
Dated two days before she d\*ed.
*If something happens to me, it wasn't an accident.
Check who changed my brake appointment.
She has a key to this house.*
The room went completely still.
Emma pressed closer to her mother.
Rachel was crying silently.
Margaret sat down on the edge of the bed without a word.
Adrian turned to face Madison.
She wasn't looking at the letter.
She was looking at Rachel.
And the look on her face was not fear anymore.
It was a warning.
